DEATH TAKES A. E. DOWNER HERE SUNDAY

A host of friends in Southeastern Colorado mourn the passing of one of the best known pioneers of the region, Alfred E. Downer, 72, who succumbed at his hone, 405 South Fourth street here Sunday morning at 8:15 o'clock. Mr. Downer in his capacity as clerk of the district court for the past quarter century had come to be known and regarded as a friend by many over the county. He had just completed a session of court Wednesday when afflicted by his last illness.

Mr. Downer moved to Lamar with his parents and four brothers, and two sisters when a young man. The family home was located northwest of Lamar at the old fair grounds. The Downers had a 20 acre vineyard there in the early days. The parents, one sister, Mrs. Ora Butler, and three brothers, Thomas "Ep", Samuel, and Gil, preceded him in death.

Survivors are one brother, Dave Downer of Hutchinson, Kans.; one sister, Mrs. Blanche Parmenter of Vallejo, California; and his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Harndin Downer to whom he was married in 1907.

Prior to being clerk of the district court Mr. Downer was city clerk at Lamar and also was in the real estate and abstract business, being associated with J. B. Traxler who recently succumbed in Grants Pass, Oregon.

Mr. Downer had been active in the Presbyterian church in Lamar for many years, and he and his wife have many friends over the vicinity. His kindly, friendly disposition endeared him to many and he will be sorely missed in the court house.

The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon 15 2:30 at the Presbyterian church with Rev. R. Curtis Westfall in charge. Interment will be made in Fairmont cemetery.
