He received his Medal of Honor as a civilian working with the US Army during the Indian Wars for "gallantry in action" while serving as a civilian scout for the 3rd Cavalry Regiment. In 1917 his award was revoked because he was civilian at the time the award was made. His family refused to give it back (Medals of Honor are technically the property of the United States Government), and in 1989 his Medal was restored to him.
Buffalo Bill did serve in the Union Army for about two years.In 1863 he enlisted as a teamster with the rank of Private in Company H, 7th Kansas Cavalry and served until discharged in 1865.
